Sales Associate

Overview of Job: This position is responsible for excellent customer service, generating sales, merchandising, and safeguarding the Co-op’s merchandise. It plays an integral role upholding the Co-op’s high standards. It impacts customer satisfaction, the Co-op’s reputation in the marketplace and profitability. Core competencies for this role are teamwork, problem solving, leadership, communication and accountability. The sales associate job is broken down into three levels and includes sales, cashier and inventory control responsibilities. To the best of their ability, employees are expected to advance to higher levels at a reasonable pace. There are different compensation ranges for higher level positions.

Accountability: This position is accountable to the Co-op and reports to the Sales Lead(s).
Regular liaison and collaboration is required with other Sales team members in parts, sales,
cashier and purchasing roles.

Sales Associates
Level 1 $16.50
Level 2 $18.17
Level 3 $20.42

Sales Level 1

Sales Responsibilities:

  • Ensure that Co-op customers receive excellent service by providing a friendly
    environment, which includes greeting and acknowledging every customer,
    maintaining solid product knowledge and all other aspects of customer service
  • Assist customers in selecting bikes and/or accessories, interpreting their needs and
    suggesting products
  • Assist in floor moves, merchandising, display maintenance, and housekeeping
    (kitchen, bathrooms, sweeping, garbage etc)
  • Assist in processing, putting away and replenishing merchandise
  • Complete Online orders and package online orders for shipping or pickup
  • Create customer profiles in Lightspeed as needed, collect customer information
  • Create special orders and work orders for customers.
  • Sell bikes and accessories, collaborate with the service department to schedule work
    orders and write up quotes for customers using lightspeed.
  • Field and direct incoming phone calls as required
  • Communicate customer requests, trends and observations to Sales Lead
  • Use Lightspeed system as required
  • Other duties as assigned

Cashiering responsibilities : (once trained)

  • Ring up sales at register, bag merchandise as required
  • Ring out work orders, layaways, special orders and process deposits under
  • Refunds and exchanges with a receipt according to our refund policy
  • Process customer discounts with valid membership card according to our discount
  • Greet every customer that comes in the store immediately
  • Answer phone, place customers on hold, page calls, take messages in message

Sales Level 2
Sales duties:
All sales level 1 responsibilities

  • Assist customers in selecting components at the parts counter
  • Address customer queries and the concerns of dissatisfied customers
  • Receive inventory on a packing slip following store procedures
  • Create customer special orders
  • Other duties as assigned

Cashiering duties: itemize cashier duties by sales level.

  • Opening and closing responsibilities as assigned including registers
  • Create special orders, take deposits including payments over the phone.
  • Supervise all test ride customers, manage ID and credit cards given as collateral.
  • Check voicemail and distribute messages
  • Monitor supplies at cashier desks including thermal paper, staples, tape, labels, etc.
  • Authorize payouts from cash drawer according to payout policy
  • Process refunds and exchanges without a receipt in line with the return policy
  • Verify and process warranty items when supervisor not available or pass on to
    appropriate person

Sales Level 3

  • All sales associate level 2 responsibilities
  • Address customer queries and the concerns of dissatisfied customers
  • Assist customers in purchasing recumbents, Pedal Assist conversions, and other
    more technical or specialized products
  • Monitor supplies for sales area / front of shop
  • Verify and process warranty items
  • Liaise with industry reps, suppliers, distributors and community contacts as required.
  • Act as shift supervisor as assigned in collaboration with sales lead including
    managing breaks, training, ordering, marketing, etc.

Cashiering duties:

  • Train and supervise other staff on cashiering
  • Work collaboratively with other departments to create policies and procedures for the
  • Oversee discounts offered, methods of payment accepted, security procedures etc in
    collaboration with admin lead

Job Qualifications:

  • Physical stamina to stand long periods, move merchandise etc.
  • Some High School; graduation not required
  • Bicycle and accessory product knowledge
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Self-initiative and eagerness to learn
  • Good verbal and written communication skills in English; literate
  • Bicycle shop experience an asset; not required
  • Strong collaborative work ethic
  • Transferrable experience in positions with responsibility
  • Cashier skills including ability to follow cash protocols and use equipment with
    confidence and accuracy
  • Experience in positions of responsibility and mature judgment

Service Level 4 & 5:

We are hiring an experienced mechanic / service writer to join the service team at a worker-owned bicycle store in downtown Toronto. As an important resource for keeping the cycling community riding, we emphasize high standards for repairs and excellent customer service. We strive to maintain a diverse and inclusive work environment that does not discriminate against race, gender identity/expression, sex, ancestry, ability, and any other basis of oppression.

This position is for a mechanic with several years of professional experience in bicycle service. They perform a wide variety of complex and routine services on all types of bicycles. They also assess bikes to diagnose problems, recommend repairs, write service workorders, and communicate this information to customers. Experience with internal gear hub service, hydraulic brakes, and wheel building is an asset. We understand that there may be gaps in knowledge depending on experiences among different shops so we recognize that an applicant may not have all of these exact skills, we place an emphasis on having strong mechanical aptitude and the ability to learn. Certification through a recognized bicycle repair institute is a plus and experience with e-bikes, recumbents, and cargo bikes is preferred. This position requires an ability to clearly communicate with both colleagues and customers, to manage and meet customer expectations, and requires direct contact with customers in person, by phone, and by email. As a worker-owned co-op, there is the prospect of joining the business as a part-owner and becoming directly involved in decision-making and in your community as a whole.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Perform tune-ups and other service packages.
  • Perform complex mechanical services including IGH service, suspension service, hydraulic brake bleeding, and wheel building
  • Accurately diagnose bicycles for repairs and write workorders with recommendations.
  • Install, maintain, and overhaul all bicycle components.
  • Assemble new bicycles.
  • Perform quality control checks on builds and repairs.
  • Stock tools, supplies, and parts as needed; shop cleaning and organizing.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Job Qualifications:

  • Strong mechanical aptitude and attention to detail.
  • Strong bicycle and accessory product knowledge.
  • Ability to perform repairs, adjustments, component installations, and component overhauls in a timely manner.
  • Professionalism, enthusiasm, and willingness to learn.
  • Several years of professional bicycle repair experience.
  • Strong customer service skills with good verbal and written communication.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Google Workspace.
  • Familiarity with Lightspeed POS is preferred.
  • Certification in bicycle repair by a recognized institute is preferred.
Starting wages are commensurate with experience and have room to grow:
Level 1: $16.50/hour
Level 2: $18.19/hour
Level 3: $20.10/hour
Level 4: $21.61/hour
Level 5: $23.86/hour
Level to be determined during an interview/assessment. The position described above with all skills met would qualify for level 4-5.
