As I sit in the office here at Urbane writing this post I have overheard two people already asking for a new front wheel and a new saddle/seat post which had just been stolen off their bikes. Despite encouraging Recent news, bike theft is still up in Toronto.

Igor did fuel much of the theft but as 1800 had been recovered from his possession, 5000 bikes have been REPORTED stolen this year ALONE. Things on a bike must be locked down … but it doesn’t need to be a daunting task. Here’s what recommend … and this comes from experience!

  1. Don't leave your bike unlocked. Bottom line.
  2. Don't leave it outside overnight. Try and keep it indoors, and better, in your home instead. Its far more secure.

  3. Take any quick-release parts with you.
Or avoid using quick release all together. We recommend replacing them for allen key bolts. It takes more time to take them off and requires a tool. another option is this.

  4. Use 2 locks or 1 high quality lock.
Two locks are great! The high quality one should be of solid steel like a kryptonite chain or a U-Lock. I recommend using a small u-lock. Not only is it convienent to carry with you but they are ideal to lock your frame up close to a post to prevent a thief from sticking something in-between the lock and frame to break it open. A secondary lock can be a light weight cable but should ONLY be used to lock any additional components of your bike like the wheelset.

  5. Keep the serial number with you.
If your bike is recovered you will need this to claim ownership.

  6. Take a recent picture of your bike.

  7. Register your bike with the police.

I'm not sure that locking a bike to the post would help if the ring is broken like in the photo you have...

By the way, I like your new site design.

Bike theft

When using the city bike "rings" there are a few things you should keep in mind,

The single rings (posts with only one ring{newly installed ones have double rings}) can be broken with a two by four.

If broken only a U-lock will potentially keep your bike safe.

that being said i would not recomend locking up with anything but a u-lock and if it is a single ring, and you own a nice bike its probably worth your time to go and look for a better place to lock up if you have a nice bike and plan on keeping it.

preventing theft

If at least one wheel is locked (as well as the frame) the bike can't be ridden away unless the lock is broken first. Most bike thieves will look for a bike that is locked only by the frame, which can be ridden away after the City bike ring is broken.

Always practice safety

Always practice safety measures, its the best thing we can do.
